A website design brief turns a broad request into a project a designer can estimate. Start with the business problem: unclear services, unsuitable enquiries or a site your team cannot update. Describe the change you want visitors to make, rather than beginning with colours and animations.

A practical approach

Separate essential requirements from preferences. A booking connection is a requirement if the business depends on it; a moving background is usually a preference. Name who supplies copy, who approves the work and which existing systems must remain connected.

Your checklist

  • Write one primary visitor action for each page.
  • List the content you already own and the content still needed.
  • Record launch dependencies, such as photography or access to hosting.

For example

For a consultancy, a useful brief might specify three service pages, a team page and an enquiry route. Add an example enquiry that would be a good fit and one that would not, so the design has a clear purpose.
