Website navigation is a set of promises about where information lives. Labels should match the questions customers bring, and destinations should fulfil those promises. Before adding dropdowns, decide which few sections deserve persistent visibility and which belong within a service or resource page.

A practical approach

Keep naming consistent across the header, footer and page headings. Visitors should not have to learn several terms for the same destination. Check the menu with a concrete task, such as finding delivery information, rather than asking only whether someone likes its appearance.

Your checklist

  • Use familiar labels for essential destinations.
  • Keep the current section identifiable.
  • Check every menu link on a narrow screen.

For example

If your menu says Support but the page contains only sales enquiries, the label creates the wrong expectation. Either change the destination or provide the support route people reasonably expect.
